The Big News (August 1, 2011)

Hiya folks,

I'm delighted to announce that I've accepted an offer to join Redbox as the company's Senior Manager of Social Media. My last day at Fifth Third Bank is August 19. My wife Pam and I are relocating from Cincinnati and returning to the Chicago area by the end of August. Our plan is to rent a house in Downers Grove, LaGrange, Elmhurst, or Hillside.

Leaving Fifth Third on a High Note
Working at Fifth Third Bank as the Social Media Strategist has been the greatest challenge and opportunity of my career (so far). Before taking the job, I had many friends warn me left, right, and center that working for a Bank was going to be difficult. I was told that the people working at Fifth Third, in particular, were stodgy and set in their ways.

Instead, I've been pleasantly surprised by the amazing group of talented individuals I've had the pleasure of meeting and working with. I've met a whole range of people young and old with energy, commitment, and real desire to innovate in Banking. I think you're going to see these people have more of an impact as time passes. Give them a chance and you'll be happy you did.

I'm very proud of the work  we've been able to accomplish in the past year:
  • Conceiving an enterprise-wide Social Media strategy that was approved by our C-Suite
  • Launching Customer Service ops on Twitter (say hi to @jamesat53 and @ryanat53)
  • Launching Student Banking on Facebook (say hi at facebook.com/53students)
  • Bringing about some culture change in a highly-regulated, risk-averse company. It's tougher than it looks, folks.
Cincinnati is "Quietly Awesome"
I cannot deny that there's a certain sense of bittersweet mixed with the delight. Pam and I moved from Chicago to Cincinnati in July 2009. At the time, it was the a move we needed to make. With the economy crumbling and both of us out of work, we needed a change in our lives. Cincinnati offered an opportunity to hit restart and get our lives back on track. We have fallen in love with the city, which as Pam puts it, is "quietly awesome."

But at the end of the day, we just missed Chicago too much. We missed the excitement that comes with living in the third-largest metro area in the country. We missed turning on WGN Radio and hearing Pat and Ron (may he rest in peace) or going to Wrigley Field. We missed Italian Beef sandwiches. We missed Superdawg. We missed our best friends and their kids. Chicago may not be our ultimate destination for the rest of our lives, but we realized that we missed it too much not to give it another go.

As I look forward at what comes next, I feel it important to look back and thank many of the Cincinnatians who have become colleagues, mentors, and friends:
